Strategic Maritime exists to provide a platform for educational materials relating to shipbuilding and associated industries, developed by Dr Paul Stott, formerly Senior Lecturer (shipbuilding and shipping market analysis) at Newcastle University, UK.
Shipbuilding, as a subject that might be included on the curricula of related engineering degrees, is difficult to teach. The industry is unique in many ways and most academics lack the experience and knowledge required to be authoritative. This is particularly the case in countries and regions where the industry declined in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and where the knowledge and experience have also declined.
Materials are included that were developed by Dr Stott over 15 years teaching at Newcastle University, following around 40 years working in shipyards around the world. The approach taken is that much of what graduates need to know, for example network planning, welding technology and lean manufacturing principles, are not shipbuilding-specific and can therefore be taught as general subjects without the need for sector specific knowledge. Some sector-specific knowledge is unavoidable however and materials are provided to support that need.
As well as lecture materials, the site includes research output, a text book and presentations on specific aspects of the industry given in recent years by Dr Stott.
The site is under construction. Materials will be added over 2026 as they are developed.

Paul Stott retired in 2025 after 50 years in the shipbuilding industry, encompassing roles in ships, shipyards, and academia. His journey began at sea as a Cadet, followed by a degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, where he graduated in 1984. On graduation he joined British Shipbuilders, focusing on accuracy control and distortion issues, later advancing to the role of shipbuilding project manager. From 1988 to 2010, he worked as a shipbuilding consultant, specializing in shipping analysis, market research, and strategic planning, serving clients in over 40 countries. His employers included notable British shipyard consultancies A&P Appledore and First Marine International, along with periods of self-employment. In 2010, he became a Senior Lecturer in shipping market analysis and ship production at Newcastle University, earning a PhD in 2017.
While Dr. Stott is primarily retired, he remains engaged in the field, enjoying opportunities to teach and to provide comment and information on shipyard market strategy and forecasting.
