Education and analysis for shipbuilding

Strategic Maritime exists to provide a platform for educational materials relating to shipbuilding and associated industries, developed by Dr Paul Stott, formerly Senior Lecturer (shipbuilding and shipping market analysis) at Newcastle University, UK.
Shipbuilding tends to be difficult for academics to teach. The industry is unique in many ways and many teachers lack the experience and knowledge required to be authoritative. This is particularly the case in countries and regions where the industry has declined and where specialist knowledge may be scarce.
This site includes materials for download for teaching of shipbuilding at university level. The approach taken is that much of what graduates need to know, for example network planning, welding technology and lean manufacturing principles, are not shipbuilding-specific and can therefore be taught as general subjects without the need for sector-specific knowledge. Some sector-specific teaching is unavoidable however.
Downloads are provided help to bridge that gap and to support general engineering teaching. Information on sources of enrichment for teaching, particularly using video, are also included.
As well as lecture materials, the site provides research output, including a text book aimed at Masters level teaching and a number of presentations on specific aspects of the industry.

Paul Stott retired in 2025 after 50 years working in ships and shipyards and teaching at universities. His career started at sea as a Cadet, followed by a degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuidling at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, graduating in 1984. On graduation he joined British Shipbuilders, initially researching problems of accuracy control and distortion and subsequently as a shipbuilding project manager. From 1988 to 2010 he worked as a shipyard consultant specialising in market research and strategic planning, working for clients in over 40 countries. Employers in this work included the British shipyard consultancies A&P Appledore and First Marine International, as well as periods of self-employment. In 2010 he became Senior Lecturer in shipping market analysis and ship production at Newcastle University, and was awarded a PhD in 2017.
Whilst Dr Stott is primarily retired he still enjoys teaching and is pleased to respond to requests for help in teaching and advice on shipbuilding education, markets and policy development.
